Words

For the Wonky Quilt Bee (got it right this time!), the bee member had us construct a little Christmas in July.  She's making a Christmas quilt and wanted to add a few Christmas-y words to it.

IMG_3205
I'd never constructed with letters before.  As I got started, I realized it was a lot like my mosaic quilt, only my colors had a specific pattern and my white space was a bit larger.  It was a lot of cutting, sewing, ironing, cutting, sewing ironing.  But, it all went relatively fast.  Quicker than I'd expected.  For some reason, my "y" on story is much larger than the other letters, probably because of the tail.  It can be trimmed down a bit, but I'll leave that to the quilt constructor to do.

Sew Modern Quilt Bee Blocks – June

*Edit: I named the wrong bee in the original post.  It's changed below.

My June blocks for the Sew Modern Quilt Bee are done.

This bee member wanted quarter log-cabin blocks.

While I was working on them, my husband walked past and said, "Those look like quarter log-cabins."  He knows his blocks!

Next month is my month for the Wonky Quilt Bee.  Off to gather my fabric together!

Bee Blocks Received

May and June were my months for the Around the World Bee.  The person for May had dropped out and I had June.  So, I sent my fabric a little bit early. Over the past several weeks, I've been receiving the blocks and extra fabric back in the mail.

There aren't enough people in the Bee to make a full quilt.  Some of the members graciously made a few more blocks, but I will have to make more this summer.  I've got a good head start!

IMG_3091
I'm calling it a Kaleidoscope of Blues quilt.  I saw this quilt on Flickr and fell in love with the design of it.  I've also been really into blues lately, so I wanted a quilt all in different shades of blue.  In the above image, you can just make out a circle of light colors.  It's missing two blocks, to make it a complete circle, but it's close.  I love the circle effect.

Coincidentally, I'd made a test block, similar to the one in the lower left, and I received two blocks in the mail with the same main triangle fabrics.  It's interesting how people see an image and it stick with you. It just stands out and you want to replicate it.  I'll definitely use the blocks.  One or two for the front, maybe one on the back, maybe for a pillow.  The possibilities are endless.

Thanks, Bee members, for the awesome blocks!

Q2 [3 x 6] Bee Blocks Done

IMG_3078
With the deadline fast approaching, I whipped together the second quarter [3 x 6] Bee Blocks.  For some reason I thought they weren't due until June 30, but it was actually two weeks earlier.

IMG_3071
I struggled a bit trying to figure out what block to make.  I've been really enamored with HST's lately, but the last block I did for the [3 x 6] Bee was HST's, so I wanted something a bit different.  I also wanted something fast.  So, I went with a sort of courthouse steps type of block with some infusion of a solid on the last strip.

IMG_3072
They were extremely quick to make, about two hours from cutting to finishing for all six blocks.  I drew out the design, cut all the fabrics, then sewed them one after another pausing only to iron.

They're in the mail to the recipients.  I hope you all like them!

Wonky House and Tree

Finished two more blocks for the Wonky Quilt Bee.  This bee member asked for a wonky house and a wonky tree.

IMG_2970

I was able to piece it so that the animals were in the tree.  Love the details of that.

IMG_2969
The roof of the house has directional lines that are supposed to imitate different slopes of a roof.

Both blocks lean toward the right.  I'm not sure what's up with that.  It's just how it came together.  Blended in with the other blocks, I'm sure it will be fine.

I'd never done this type of piecing before, but I enjoyed it and look forward to more opportunities to practice the skill.

Another block done!

IMG_2894
The first block I made for the April member of our Around the World Bee took so long that I put off making the second for a couple weeks just to recuperate.  I'm happy to say that the second block went much faster.  It's it great when we can learn from our experiences?!?

The blocks are slightly late, but will be sent out this week, only two weeks late or so.

What is it about tiny piecing these days?  Somehow, I've both drawn and plagued by it.  I'm ready for something larger!

They’re done!

25 blocks of very tiny squares.  I joined the Tokyo Subway Map Swap a while back.  Each of us was to make 25 copies of the same block.  I chose block 16, as I had plenty of greens and grays on hand.

IMG_2885
The advantage to doing the same block over and over again is that I could strip piece it.  I cut 2" strips, sewed those strips together and cut out 2" strips from those.

IMG_2363
One of the most difficult things was trying to keep a consistent seam allowance.  It had to be an exact 1/4".   When I matched up the seams, some were slightly off,but I'm hoping it won't be too noticeable once the whole quilt is put together.  Besides, I expect to receive some blocks where the seams are off, too.  That's just part of doing a swap like this.

After I made these 25 blocks, I realized that I'd essentially constructed enough blocks to make an entire quilt of very tiny squares, albeit the same 25 squares.  I'm sending these blocks out this week and I can't wait to receive the other blocks back so I can construct the whole quilt top.  That will be another summer project!

Around the World Bee

IMG_2883
It's my month for the Around the World Bee and I've decided to go with all blues.  I've been wanting to make a value quilt for some time now, and recently have been drawn to various shades of blue.  A perfect combination.

IMG_2872
I decided to ask my fellow bee members to make a kaleidoscope block using different color values and sent them a ton of fabric to use creatively.  Since it's such a small bee, I'll probably end making additional blocks to make a full quilt.  I'm excited to see how the colors come together!

Perspectives Block Tutorial

Create a beautiful illusion with this perspectives block. When the blocks are put together circles appear, but there are no curved seams. The block utilizes two different size triangles to create this illusion. The tutorial is a FREE download! #quiltblock #perspectivesblock
